Really not a very well-written film. Loosely based on the Conan Doyle record, this is a collection of former jokes and sketches which don’t really hang together. A who’s who of British comedy though: Pete, Dud, Kenneth Williams, Irene Handl, Max Wall, Denholm Elliot and others. Some very silly moments, not least when Denholm Elliot’s chihuahua urinates for about 3 minutes all over Dr Watson (played by Dud) . Probably worth seeing if you are a Pete and Dud fan, but it’s not their best worry by any means.

Buyer Beware -

I won’t comment in detail on the quality of this movie, Paul Morrissey was/is an dreadful director but the cast of “Hound” clearly directed themselves and, left to their beget devices, what they came up with was a compendium of their tried and trusted comedy routines (powerful loved by UK theatre and television audiences through the years) . In this sense, as a permanent represent of Kenneth Williams, Dud and Pete, Max Wall, Irene Handl et al, the movie is a delight to occupy – but after amazon replaced a unfriendly disc – guess what? The replacement has the same flaw – it freezes in the middle of Dud and Pete’s hilarious “medium” scene (and probably in other places too but the disc freezes so completely you can’t Win to other scenes) . Double-sided discs seem vulnerable to technical pain and my ask is this – why the HELL do studios even witness putting a “bulky frame” version of a movie on side 2 of ANY disc? Who on earth wants to explore a abominable pan-and-scan version of a widescreen movie? The letterboxed side would have been all I wanted except – that’s the side that has the flaw! Obviously a atrocious pressing and who knows how many of these flawed discs are out there? Be careful!

Of all the movies that I have seen that has moved me, Scent of a Woman was the one that did it. A highly emotional movie which starred Academy Award Winning Actor, Al Pacino who portrayed Ret. Lt. Col. Frank Slade, and Chris O’Donnell as the young modern faced student of the prestigious Baird School, Charlie Simms.

Charlie(O’ Donnell) takes a job caring for Slade(Pacino), a washed-up, decorated military man who clings to his Jack Daniels, so he can fetch enough money to go home for the Christmas Holidays. Along the draw, Slade takes the young man through different turns during the Thanksgiving Day weekend in Recent York City not brilliant what the boy will quiz. While the unpredictable occurs, Charlie contemplates his fate with his school honor–a conflict of interest with who is your actual friends and who are not.

The entire movie wraps around relationships and how strangers can produce a incompatibility in a exiguous over 2 hours and 37 minutes. For one weekend, Charlie and Slade behold that they need each other more than they view, with different circumstances. You’d have to inspect the movie to know what I’m talking about, especially the finale.

The director, Martin Brest(Beverly Hills Cop and Meet Joe Shaded), has the knack of bringing out the best in the characters even in awful situations. The soft sides always present in those who don’t appear to have it.

If this film had a theme it would be, living is worth living.

When I first heard of this movie, I had no clue what it was about. My friend and I saw a teaser poster with Al Pacino and Gabrielle Anwar dancing the tango labeled “Scent of a Woman”. Putting two and two together, we went into the theater thinking we were watching a admire fable until the movie started. Whoops. Despite my misgivings in the beginning, I was pleasantly surprised. What I found was a riveting tale of mentor-mentee relationship. I cherish movies that involve the master taking young grasshopper under his waft. Except master is not Mr. Perfect himself. Both the student and the teacher learn from each other’s weaknesses. And despite Lt Col Slade’s struggle with his misfortunate blinding accident, his Army core values were level-headed in tact. Hard-working and willing to give up a Thanksgiving weekend to search for after an embittered retiree, Slade sees an underlying goodness in Chris O’Donnell’s fragile, fence-sitting character, Charlie. Like most young men his age, he was susceptible to peruse pressure and could easily resolve the wicked path as his friends had. Slade is blind but easily sees the temptation to compromise the boy’s integrity and future. “This stale bat has sharper radar than the Nautilus” Slade tells his young league. He lays all the cards out for Charlie to peruse, but knew instinctively it was up to the boy to create his occupy decision. Charlie eventually shows his moral colors in the face of adversity. Like a righteous soldier, he never leaves his commander’s side even when the exertion is self-inflicting. Character like that is a rarity in anyone and must be preserved! This prompts Slade to reciprocate his encourage for Charlie who is enrolled in a prestigious school reknowned for producing some of the most principal figure heads in America. “Be careful what type of leaders you’re making,” he warns the school staff. Charlie learns lessons in life that no school could instruct him.

Underneath the tough exterior, there was a softer side to Slade. He definitely had a thing for the ladies. Instead of playing up a macho cassanova, “Mac-Daddy” persona predominate in a lot of films today, Slade is quite the charmer and gentlemen. He’s cultured, sophisticated, genteel and surprisingly knowledgeable about women’s perfume. Hence the film’s title. I fetch that warrior-poet quality incredibly sexy and enthralling. You can’t resist a man who makes the tango contemplate so easy and doesn’t mind getting “all tangled up” with you. A gorgeous role played by Pacino earning him a well-deserved oscar which probably was most credited for by his empowering monologue in the slay. This is by far his best role in a movie.

It is however, a marvelous presentation of the rise of the steel industry, I utilize it in my classroom.

Instead of being named “AC and the Age of Steel,” it should have been named “The Age of Steel with Andrew Carnegie.” This documentary is more about steel than this celebrated rich guy. They don’t even bring up Carnegie until one-fifth of the design into the work. They reveal about two photos of him and that’s all. You never learn if he went to college, what charities he supported, or how he died. They display a photo of Carnegie with a man I bear to be Booker T. Washington. Did Carnegie serve Dusky colleges or other African-American causes of the time? This work never answers: all it does is focus on steel. I can’t beget that the History Channel actually view a marketable number of people would want to know about that. Leave that dreary stuff in an engineering classroom! I liked that the interviewees came from a diverse range of universities in the South and North. I dislike that I’m buying into ideas that only “grand men” are agreeable of historical works. But quiet, yawn! I was left very disappointed.

My 7 month obsolete baby absolutely loves Holpa, and all of the Hopla dvd’s. He’s been watching the same 3 since he was born. Ive never seen a cartoon like this before. My son constantly watches it several times a day everyday and everytime i witness at the tv i look something different. Hopla is filled with such a diverse range of activities that you dont know what is coming next, and having this on my tv all day, somehow it doesnt seem repeative or like im watching the same parts over and over again. the music is calming, and the pictures are intellectual and interactive. A must-have for your child. (Hopla also comes free through the netflix and Xbox 360 alliance, thats how i eye it!)

This DVD is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I wasn’t determined about it, but I liked the Parents’ Choice Awards review, so I bought it for my 4 year veteran nephew. He LOVES it. There are games- like matching, etc., and my nephew particularly likes the segments where things are “drawn” and the kids are supposed to guess what the object is before the drawing is complete. It’s really well made and high quality. This is a DVD he asks for again and again, and I deem it’s objective really sweet and novel. Give this a try if you have an older preschooler. They’ll learn a lot and really bask in it!

It only took a decade. My Vivid Career is FINALLY on DVD!!! It is a detached tour de force of kindly acting, stunning art direction and cinematography, a fabulous chronicle about a writer coming out of girlish egotism to join a larger world and invent a vision, and an gripping portray of Victorian Australia among the immigrant society. Judy Davis is sparkle and tang playing the volatile Sybilla, very molten as she fires, cools and then erupts like any young adult. Sam Neill, aside from being very effective eyedrops that reminds you of Gary Cooper or Alan Bates, swaggers and holds posthaste as her suitor, being a willing foil to unpredictability. There are accomplished supporting performances that paint her yarn with pathos, a lot of humor with the trusty thought of the importance of family cherish. In the spirit of a time when passions were to be restrained and redirected into more animated pursuits, My Sparkling Career stays in character in this unique visual medium by presenting passion in the guise of playful boat rides and a pillow fight for the ages. You’ll feel the anxiety of dust blowing mercilessly through the windows, parental fear, teenage apprehension, affection in the muddiest and wealthier places, and the frustration of admire. It is sterling enough to discover into that time as a history or anthropology lesson, or you can honest sit wait on and let it entertain.

I first saw this movie on double bill following Night of the Shooting Stars (by the Taviani brothers) at a movie theater in Washington, D.C. It was like eating really suited lasagna with a really capable apple pie. You have to really focus on each film and not contemplate about them together. A better partner to My Knowing Career would be Pricilla, Queen of the Desert, Man from Snowy River, or Lantana. You could also have a Judy Davis film festival by watching it with Husbands and Wives, Impromptu, or that film she did about Judy Garland. For a Sam Neill film fest, sight the Reilly Ace of Spies series, The Piano, Plenty, or Weep in the Dim. Or, you can leer it by itself, like a fraction of really great apple pie.

What’s to say about “My Incandescent Career” that hasn’t been said already? A helpful first trouble for then up and coming actors Judy Davis, Sam Neill, and director Gillian Armstrong. Those 3 are truly living up to the title of the film.

In respond to the previous reviewers here on Amazon.com, correct that the film isn’t available on DVD or current VHS for that matter in the USA. I heard there was a spot with who had the rights to the film in the last 10 years. Supposedly, some Panamanian company acquired the rights inadvertantly with a package of forgettable Aussie films. Margaret Fink, the producer, said she nearly dropped plain when she heard this. Fortunately, Fink and Australia reacquired “My Incandescent Career” in the last couple of years through true means. That’s why “My Shiny Career” has already been released on current DVDs in the UK and Australia. I bought the Australian DVD because of the widescreen presentation and DVD extras that it has which include a substantial commentary by Gillian Armstrong as well as short interviews with producer Margaret Fink, Gillian Armstrong, film footage from Canne with Fink, Davis, and Armstrong, and more. It cost me about $23 (includes shipping from Australia) for a ticket novel DVD which is a bargain compared to how grand obsolete tapes go for on ebay. The UK version is cheaper but has no xtras I mediate. These position coded 2 or 4 DVDs will not play on a typical DVD player sold in the USA, but you can easily acquire definite DVD players sold at Bestbuy, Target, computer stores, etc… that can be made multi-region (dwelling free) so they can play any DVD in the world. I bought myself one particular brand/model for $50. If you don’t want to remove a area free player, you can also play foreign DVDs on your computer DVD-ROM drive easily.

Hopefully, one day “My Shiny Career” will be released in the USA in heavenly DVD. The film has been broadcast on cable channels in the USA in the past year. Which could be a impress it will slay up on DVD here eventually. Perhaps similar to how “Impromptu” appeared on cable, then a year later it was released on DVD. Wicked your fingers!

This has always been one of my common movies. I’ve objective watched it for maybe the tenth time, and my jaw hurts from the constant grin, along with a move or two, that viewing this film produces. The sage of the inhabitants of “The Footlights Club”, those struggling young actresses pursuing the glory and heartbreak of show-biz, is unprejudiced as modern and witty as when it was produced in 1937. Katherine Hepburn was somewhere in the midst of her “Box Office Poison” phase when she made this film. She is fabulous as “Terry Randall”, the heiress attempting to live in anonymity to pursue her starry dream, against the wishes of her wealthy father. She is assisted in all this comaraderie by the now legendary cast of Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, and Ann Miller. Other than Rogers, all the others were relatively unknown at this point, and their intimidation at the prospect of working with the Colossal Kate has been often told. Ann Miller was but a babe here, and we accumulate to glance her tap!, something she later became very notorious for. Also, our beloved Lucys wisecracking and dead-pan humor foreshadow her future greatness as the worlds approved t.v. clown. This superbly written film, taken from the play by Edna Ferber and George Kaufmann, is pudgy of witty banter, repartee, occasional sweet sentiment, and tragedy, as the aesthetic gaggle of girls try and constantly out-talk each other. It is rich with improbable character roles, the stand out being that of Constance Collier, as the older resident drama coach and musty actress. She is absolutely hysterical in her delivery, as she attempts to impart anyone who will listen about her acting glory days of past, always accompanied by the showing of her obsolete review clippings, which always fair happen to be at hands near. There impartial aren’t any astounding character actresses like this anymore, or, if there are, the roles for them are few and far between. In precise life, Miss Collier, illustrious for her Fresh York soirees, was Katherine Hepburns drama coach and dear friend, and, on her death in the mid-1950′s, Miss Hepburn inherited Miss Colliers secretary, Phyllis Wilbourn, who remained with her for over forty years. Miss Collier was also drama coach for the mountainous Garbo, as well as, for a brief time, her beloved Marilyn Monroe (Read “A Lovely Child” by Truman Capote.) Some may secure determined scenes and acting styles in this film dated, but, if so, don’t let that distract you from its timeless wit in its depiction of those who will risk all to accomplish their dream of their name in lights. This film also has one of my popular endings and fade-outs, which always leaves a smile on my face. A classic.

“The Philadelphia Narrative” brought Katharine Hepburn’s film career encourage from the oblivion of being considered “Box Office Poison” by the nation’s theater owners, but she was making a string of suited pictures legal before that classic 1940 film beginning with 1937′s “Stage Door.” Her next two films were “Bringing Up Baby” and “Holiday,” both with Cary Grant, and all four films have Hepburn playing a rich girl. In “Stage Door” she is Terry Randall, a debutante and wannabee actress who comes to Unusual York City to become a Broadway star. She moves into the Footlights Club, where she joins a company of awful, starving young actresses who are all trying to beget it in expose businesses.

Terry ends up rooming with Jean Maitland (Ginger Rogers), an acid-tongued but softhearted dancer. The two trade barbs over everything from Terry’s extensive wardrobe to Jean’s affair with Anthony Powell (Adolphe Menjou), a Broadway producer who is working his contrivance through an endless procession of young women. His next huge production is “Enchanted April,” and in order to gather funding he is cornered into giving the inexperienced and patently inept Terry the starring role. The fraction should have gone to Kaye Hamilton (Andrea Leeds), a talented actress at the club who is broke and on the verge of starvation. When Terry gets the portion Kaye is crushed.

Based on the play by Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman, the script by Morrie Ryskind and Anthony Veiler retained the basic residence line regarding Terry, Jean, and Kay, while provided some improbable crackling dialogue amongst the girls (some of which was supposedly based on overhearing the actresses chatting during rehearsals) . One of the prime attractions of the film today are the faces that would become familiar in the future, such as Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, and Ann Miller.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Stage Door! Click Here

The note share of the film is the play-within-the-play sequences, which was remodeled after a scene in the third act of “The Lake,” the injurious Broadway play were Dorothy Parker got off the notorious shot “Katharine Hepburn ran the gamut of emotions from A to B.” This is where the eminent line “The calla lilies are in bloom again” is uttered by Hepburn. In rehearsal she butchers the line and the scene in the most horrendous fashion. But then, in the mountainous tradition of opening nights in such films, Terry turns in a transcendent performance. The comparison of the two scenes is big evidence of the range of Hepburn’s acting talents at this point in her career.

Admittedly it seems outlandish that Terry could be so inept, but the transformation is rewarding, as is the payoff of the film. However, Hepburn’s performance was apparently overshadowed by the realization that Ginger Rogers was also a aesthetic superior comedienne as well as a stout dancer. Serene, it is the ensemble nature of the film, with all those wisecracking young girls trying to do it in the colossal awful city that is the prime attraction. “Stage Door” received Oscar nominations for Best Represent, Best Writing (Screenplay), Best Director for Gregory La Cava, and Best Supporting Actress for Leeds.

I saw the movie in a heavenly theater in downtown San Francisco on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and was surprised to fetch so few people in the movie theater–maybe 75 of us, and the theater could have fit 500. I wonder if some of the lukewarm reviews haven’t influenced people’s decisions to go to RENT. Hope not, for I’m here to impart you, this movie is dynamite and IMHO considerable, noteworthy better than the play. For one thing, in the movie you can hear every word, even with the increased rock instrumentation, for hundreds of sound experts have worked their magic and made obvious that even people underwater could hear every single syllable; whereas on stage, it depended from night to night what percentage of the lyrics were going to be coming across the testy sound system of the Nederlander (NYC) .

I did miss Daphne Rubin-Vega who was incomparably sexy and chilling as Mimi, but I never believed her being in savor, and Rosario Dawson looked like she was fair ‘playing’ at being awful and underneath she was ready to drop in like as soon as she saw Roger through the window. Her scenes of addiction are captured in the movie effectively, in a rpaid montage that might disconcert some rentheads but will, I contemplate, be easily understood by those fresh to the reveal.

Yes, some of the actors looked older than 20 somethings. But we forget that most of those who died of AIDS in the 1989-90 period were actually in their 30s. What’s the enormous deal? To me, Angel’s fate is all the more shadowy because he seemed to be healthy for so long and then, all of a sudden, well, any more would bring me into spoiler territory.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rent! Click Here

Idina Menzel is not as over the top as she is on stage, but there’s serene plenty of fire power there, and she’s bigger than anything in the movies since the heyday of Betty Hutton! She looks remarkably handsome and she doesn’t miss a trick; and fair when you mediate she’ll overshadow Tracie Thoms as her attorney girlfriend, Joanne, the latter pulls off some memorable silly business and signals her disappointment and regret with her expressive brown eyes. Anthony Rapp is charming as Tag Cohen, he comes off as a small panic, I wonder how vast he is, the constant scenes of him snarking down the streets with his fists clenched in enrage at his sides, but no one else around to instruct his suitable proportions–the stale Alan Ladd trick. And Adam Pascal is suave and tormented in equal measures as Roger. His eyelashes are so long I expected them to have a special spotlights in the credits, but no.

I have to disagree with the posters who claim that Larson wrote all the best numbers for the men in the cast. Maybe that’s personal pleading, but I regain the best songs gorgeous noteworthy divided correct down the middle. Mimi’s “Out Tonight” isn’t as sharp as on stage, but it is worthy more compellingly staged, as Rosario Dawson steps out of the Cat Scratch Club after her shift only to initiate into the second verse, and seems to scale the wall of the loft to pick up to Roger like Catwoman in the third. (“I’ll let you acquire me . . .”) “Light My Candle” suffers a petite without Daphne Rubin-Vega in it, and Adam Pascal acts as though he knows he’s cheating on her with Rosario Dawson. Afterwards he gets his balls benefit. The ensemble singing of “Will I? ” and “Another Day” are perfectly staged and rehearsed, and it’s there that I started to lose it. I guess I must have spent the last seventy minutes of the movie in a continual rain of tears. By the slay I had to sit through all the credits in a vain attempt to collect composure. The faces of those whom I lost to AIDS flashed before my eyes. Not all of them, but some of them. I did determine to go out and try to practice fancy on a broad scale. They got me this time. “No other path, no other procedure, give in to adore or live in alarm.”

These sentiments are vapid and, in the daylight, seem a microscopic comic, but the beauty and power of the movie is to convince you of their truth. Advantageous work all around. I hope the movie’s an vast success.

I was born to treasure “Rent.” Having grown up listening to my mother’s relate of “La Boheme” playing as she did her housework, I anxiously anticipated seeing the Broadway production when I was in Unique York in 1999. Although, it was valid, the movie version was so powerful more appetizing to me, mainly because the words to the glorious songs were certain and powerful more understandable. I realize Broadway is a one-shot deal and a movie can have countless takes on a scene, so I’m not putting down the play I loved in any plot, honest saying the movie was an easier and more toothsome viewing experience.

From the spectacular opening scene where the elephantine cast sings the pleasing “Seasons of Care For,” the stage is location for a glowing celebration of life, living it to the fullest, and enjoying every moment. Yes, there is heartbreak on the cloak and many moist eyes in the theater, but this is mainly a overjoyed narrative of friendship, fancy, and reaching out to your fellow man.

The acting is worthy, lovingly done by actors who obviously characterize to their roles in a profound scheme. Wilson Jermaine excels as Angel, especially in the show-stopping “Today 4 U.” Adam Pascal and Rosario Dawson are believable as the romantic leads and Jesse L. Martin will astound his “Law and Order” fans with his rich singing articulate and dancing ability. All the cast is obliging, the prove is electric with its high-energy singing and dancing, and overall, the best movie I have seen in a long, long time. I will definitely score the DVD the day it is available.

I have one word to report this movie. That word is “terrible.”

This is an almost unbearable drama about a college student transported via a time disappear headband in an arcade to the days of Oliver Cromwell’s England. I watched it because it sounded funny, but the reality is that it smells like a wet dog. The three main space points are essentially time disappear, Cromwell’s England, and animal husbandry (of sorts.) The student is played by the fetid Shannon Dow Smith (yes, he’s the hero) who teaches the ladies of Dorset to bustle a castle burly of illicit trade amongst the Puritans. Needless to say there are abominable costumes, really abominable English accents (The movie was filmed in Romania, and most of the smaller parts were played by Romanians who learned their lines phonetically!), and incredibly moronic status twists.

Technically the movie is quite awful. Lots of camera jitter can be seen on occasion. At least once the sound and film were not in sync, resulting in people speaking with no words being heard. My biggest overall complaints, though, were the music and the editing. The editing was so choppy, that it was actually offensive to watch; frequently scenes were stuck in where they made absolutely no sense, and only wait on to confuse the already muddled area. The music is “serene jazz” type piano music that is about 100 decibels louder than the rest of the soundtrack, so have your thumb on the volume control on the remote. As a final affront to the audience, the cast is listed in the credits, but the character names are not, meaning you have no clue who was who, except in the extremely unlikely event that you had heard of any of these actors before.

There are very few highlights to discuss. They are Betsy Lynn George and the girl who played the waitress arrive the college in the frame shots. Betsy Lynn George is pretty, and is probably the only actress in the film with proper thespian talent. She is better known for her salubrious starring role in “Petticoat Planet” which I recommend only in preference to this film (marginally) . I am unsure who the waitress is (thanks to the credits) but own it is Christi Harris, although I am not sure of that. Whoever she is, she is also decent in her role and is very radiant. Beyond this minor praise, the rest of the film is a mess.

I can’t imagine any reason I would ever peruse this again unless threatened with outrageous bodily hurt. Shame on you David LeCoteau for directing this portion of drek (under pseudonym “Ellen Cabot”), and shame on you Vlad and Oana Paunescu for producing something so artistically and morally bankrupt.

Maybe I don’t understand the definition of “lurid.” From my perspective, I consider this film would have been more aptly entitled, “Warm and Cozy Castle Tales.” If you want hot busty babes, hot sex, hot raunch, and lots of nudity, this film is probably not for you.
